Red deer rut in Grytdalen

65bd9107aa00f36bafdc22e60e35d9f8.jpg0aeccb1788e31760e08e4592d7832f45.jpgFor me, red deer photography in the autumn has usually been more like real challenge than a success story. While it can be frustrating, it is the autumn’s most beautiful adventure. Four or five years ago the Grytdalen Nature Reserve was the best place in Norway to experience the red deer rut. Unfortunately, due to the increasing pressure of hunting just outside the protected area, Grytdalen had become a shadow of what it has been before. My recent trip was a sorrowful experience, as the hills filled by the echoing sound of bellowing red deers in the past, were silent this year. Previously I could hear 30 males “shouting” in the early morning hours, but this time I caught only the sporadic sound of 4 or 5 stags. Distant rifle-shots could be heard every single day in the nature reserve, which does not make the future prospects of this area much brighter…

Dear Erlend The story you are telling from Grytdalen makes me sad. The number of Norwegians that take part in hunting is increasing and significant political forces want to open the area for hunting. Despite the efforts made by “Grytdalens venner” [Friends of Grytdalen], Norges Naturvernforbund [Friends of the Earth Norway] and others, the local branches of the Labor Party and The Norwegian Association of Hunters and Anglers seem to favor hunting and if they are able to mobilize their national organizations, they are powerful. Let’s hope the effort to save this (by Norwegian standards) pristine for the future. Anders

Since 2005, we have travelled together as a team, constantly being on the move to capture those memorable experiences in nature, with our cameras in our hands. Our projects capture different parts of the "Cap of the North", in a never-ending search for eye-catching scenes, and the magic light that is so characteristic of this region. It is the desire to get back to our roots – to live with nature that inspires us to create the images that we do.
